How Drones Work

In this digital world, the word "drone" has taken on negative meaning. Mass media see drones as inhuman machines quietly sneaking through the skies in  pursuit of unknown human suspects. The general public view reconnaissance drones as reminders that someone is watching everything you do. Drones are powerful weapons and spy tools. But they are also do much more.
Even though "drone" is the most commonly used term, these flying machines are also known as UAVs (unmanned aerial vehicles). Government and military agencies were the first to use drones for warfare, these winged machines are now sold to kids,Remote controlled plane hobbyists, photographers, videographers, farmers and anyone that can gain from a view from the skies around them.
Military-grade drones can enter a backpack, or can be as massive as a full-size aeroplane and loaded with death-dealing payloads. These drones can cost several millions of dollars and with wingspans of more than 100 feet (30 meters).
Eventhough military drones are presented to the public as inhuman and high precision types of war machines, they can be disturbingly deadly. The Bureau of Investigative Journalism says that in only Pakistan, the United States staged hundreds of drone strikes that killed thousands of people, of which 1,000 were civilians and 200 were children.

Consumer and commercial drones brings a better twist with an automated flight. They can fit in your palm and cost less than $100. Rugged and more advanced models cost thousands of dollars and interfere with local radar, which can put you in trouble with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).
Smaller drones used by commercial enterprises are increasing in number. These businesses will benefit immensely in numerous and unbelievable ways, using drones to boost revenue and help improve economies all over the globe.
Government agencies such as fire departments, police and disasters and emergency response departments all use drones to certain extent, gaining assess extreme situations, locating missing people and helping fellow humans. Drones are good for construction, geomapping, wildlife conservation, pipeline monitoring and lots more.
Drones are simply fun.Humans can't grow wings and fly, but we can do much more with the help of our winged friends, using cameras to take images or just surfing the sky for the joy of it.
The Drone Ground story
There is no clear cut historical record of the moment when the first drone went airborne. That's in part due to a matter of semantics when trying to know actually which historical device fit in as a drone. May be one of the explosives-laden balloons launched in the 1800s .May be it is the initial V-1 rockets that the Germans deployed during WWII.
In the early 1900s, military agencies used drones, even radio-controlled versions, for target practice. Engineers developed unmanned aircraft loaded with munitions. These were not drones. These were the first cruise missiles, often known as flying torpedoes, and which is not meant to return to launch site.
During the Cold War, the U.S speed up research base on drones, having the intention to employ them as alternative to manned spy planes. As the Vietnam War dragged on, drones flew thousands of high-risk reconnaissance missions and were destroyed by enemy fire, but in the end saved lives of pilots who would have died.
At the same time, engineers started fitting drones with real-time surveillance equipment.Using their in-flight cameras and unrestricted intent, drones can hover around enemy lines and monitor troop movements and strategies without sacrificing human lives.
In 2002, the CIA used a Predator drone to strike enemy combatants in Afghanistan. The Predator (particulaly, the MQ-1 Predator), with its fear spreading name, was one of the first most military drones to be used in widespread action. It was launched in 1995 and has since moved all over the world — but used mainly in the Middle East. It has ability to fly more than 500 miles (805 kilometers) on single take-off and hover around targets for hours; armed types can launch sophisticated missiles.
The Predator is one of the well known military drones, now it's one of the numerous drones. The first strikes in Afghanistan were, as they say, just the beginning of something spectacular.
More Military Fire Power
With advent of the digital revolution comes the microprocessors and long-distance communications capabilities, drones have much, more useful for military coordination.By one single count, the U.S. military has nearly 11,000 manned airplanes and may be 8,000 drones, suggesting that one-third of the air force is remotely controlled. For anyone who fears the advent of automated, sci-fi-type warfare, that is already happening here.
The U.S. military has three categories of drones: mini, tactical and strategic. Mini drones are usually small and used for short-range surveillance. Tactical drones have ability to fly for several hours and as far as 200 miles (322 kilometers) and are employed to locate enemy targets. Strategic drones have ability to fly for days and can be armed with weapons.
Certain drones are powered by battery to turn propellers. Latest and expensive versions have whole jet engines and have ability to fly 500 miles (805 kilometers) per hour or more, climbing up to 50,000 feet (15,240 meters) or higher.
Some drones are self controlled, using pre programmed commands.Several others require pilots. Those pilots can be on the ground level close to the operation, or in control rooms, many miles away, securing their minions using high-speed wireless networking links.
In addition, since there is a slight delay of a couple of seconds from the control room to the drone, crashes are likely to happen. At times pilots press the wrong buttons and other times they wrongly interpret the flight data they see on their workstation monitors; cameras on the drones are not good substitute for a pilot's real vision and other senses. More than 400 large drones have crashed since 2001, but so many disasters have been prevented. If a communications link is broken, advanced drones are programmed to fly in circles or return to the nearest base without human guidance.

Just like air traffic controllers, drone pilots have high-stress yet often dull and repetitive jobs, mostly surfing places for intelligence and potential targets.
Due burnout, they quit three times as often as regular pilots, and the U.S. military just increased drone pilot salaries to prevent them from taking the exit door.
Those who stay receive extensive training in a traditional classroom setting, as well as hands-on training at their computers. They execute endless practice runs and then review their in-flight decisions, attempting to hone their minds to select the best approach to any given area view, especially those that require use of deadly force.
When they score an important victory, these pilots receive medals just like any others, and in spite of the geographical disconnect from their targets, many suffer emotional trauma from the damage their strike causes.
Not all drones inflict suffering and mayhem. There is an entire spectrum of drones for commercial and private use.
Drones in Your Homes
In several places, civilian and commercial drone use is highly regulated by aviation administrators, due to safety. That will not prevent people from using drones for a  lot of purposes such as videography, sheep herding, product delivery and crop surveying.
If you do a search on your favorite online megastore, you will come across several types of drones available. Some less than $100,other costs more. There are two main broad categories of drone: fixed wing and rotary.
Each category with its own strengths and weaknesses.
Fixed-wing drones have ability to be hand-launched, but usually a runway or a catapult, they are usually faster and fly longer than their rotary brothers.
One option is the eBee senseFly,is a fixed-wing drone designed specifically for mapping operations.Launch it into the air and it takes a pre-programmed destination, taking high-resolution images, which are then brought together as maps and 3-D models. It can move for more than 4 square miles (10.4 square kilometers) on a single flight. Farmers are the main customers, as they use the drone to improve their agricultural practices and increase their yields. The eBee goes for more than $10,000.

The Agribotix Hornet LR is different type of fixed-wing drone, and like the eBee, it is mainly for agricultural use. It comes with a 6.4-foot (2-meter) wingspan and a cruising speed of around 30 miles (48 kilometers) per hour. It can fly for almost a half an hour before it comes down for recharging.Instead of only offering purchase options, Agribotix leases out units to customers for less than $2,000.

Fixed-wing drone is part of the sliver of the commercial and hobbyist drone market.
The Most Common UAVs
Fixed-wing drones are faster and fly far distances, rotary types are more common, in part because they are quite easy to fly and preferred for purposes like photography. If you need a rotary drone, you'll have a plethora of choices to choose from.
On the less costly side, for instance,we have the Hubsan Mini RTF quadcopter, which goes for less than $60.It's very tiny and it will fit in your palm. After a 40-minute charging, you'll have around seven minutes of flight during which you can make the drone do four-way flips and other stunts. You can also snap pictures on a 0.3-megapixel camera.

The Parrot AR.Drone 2.0 Power version is a quadcopter  goes for $400 online. This drone comes with upgraded batteries that give about 36 minutes of flight time. It comes with a free flight control app that you can load to your WiFi-enabled device, such as a tablet or smartphone, giving you control over the drone to the range of 165 feet (50 meters). It also has a 720p HD video camera on board that streams live video to your device, giving you a bird's-eye view literally on the go.

One of the well-known producers is DJI, which makes the DJ Phantom series. These drones are not only for fun but also intended to provide upcoming cinematographers means to get amazingly cool angles without spending more on expensive gear.Certain models are fitted with GoPro camera mounts, while others come with their own on-board cameras .
The FC40 Phantom 2 Vision+ quadcopter costs below $1,000. It can fly to about 2,600 feet (792 meters), with a flight time of nearly 25 minutes. A controller assists the pilot manage the drone's flight, while the app loaded on your phone or tablet adjusts the video and camera capabilities.

Having lots of these flying things surfing around, it's difficult to pretend that they remind us those old remote-control helicopters and aeroplanes. What makes the difference between the old radio-controlled machines and new comer drones.
This is as result of the additional automation and advanced digital capabilities. While those old remote-controlled devices require more attention, drones little or no attention and can do amazingly cool things on their own.For instance,if you input in a GPS location,a drone can autonomously fly to the point and then maintain its position. Or run a so-called "follow me" mode, and the drone follows you anywhere, traling you, using the signals from your phone.
Present day drones are fitted with a whole spectrum of similar fun and useful features. All of these capabilities are not worth it, if it can't get off of the ground

Aerial Acrobatics
On-lookers often notice one striking features about drones — they usually have four propellers unlike old RC helicopters, with just one main rotor. Drones require more rotors because of the need  for more stability to exhibit their automated functions.

More rotors results to more lift.Lift is the force that spinning propellers create under a flying plane. The more lift a device produces, the higher and faster it can fly,and the more load it can carry, which is important for anyone who need to put a camera on-board a drone.A little lift means a drone crash land, or never get airborne at all.
The main reason that nearly all consumer drones not having more than 15 to 20 minutes of flight time is that of power. Drones require batteries power for their props. A number of lightweight rechargeable batteries is enough for a short time in the air but using additional batteries does lot more, only to realize the extra weight add up,resulting short overall flight time.
As the batteries power up the rotor motors, the propellers begin to spin, and the spin of each prop relative to the others combines to alter altitude and direction. Increase rotor speed and they'll produce enough lift to overcome the influence of gravity, tipping the drone higher and higher.
If you require that the drone to tilt to one side, two rotors will start spinning faster on one side, creating more lift.Doing so,part of the upward lift turns to a sort of sideways force, making the drone move forward or backwards. In similar manner, different prop speeds will spin the drone around.
Clearly, you don't have to concern yourself about these processes as you're flying a drone, unless you want it to crash . Drones are equipped with accelerometers and gyroscopes which help maintain their direction in space. These equipment are able detect linear acceleration, angular orientation and other directional clues to prevent them from crashing to the ground or unsuspecting passers-by.
A lot of drones are equipped with GPS,giving the machine ability to know wherever it is.If command the drone to hover in one small space and it will do so,against a breeze.
To enter your commands,a controller required,a typical one uses 2.4 gigahertz radio waves. Numerous drone controllers resemble RC controllers of old; a box unit having two thumb joysticks and a retractable antenna. Others use a combination of 2.4 gigahertz signals and WiFi, and they look like old-school controller just like a gamepad, or rely on a control app installed on your smartphone or tablet.

How Google Fiber Works

Some of us are old enough to recollect a time when everyone on the Internet used it through a dial-up connection. Your computer connected to a modem that noisily calls the phone number of an  ISP (Internet Service Provider) to allow you connect at 56 kilobits per second, if you were quite fortunate to have a faster modem. Web pages  load slowly onto pc screens.Pictures usually use a lot of time to fully show up. Software usually take hours to fully download. If you do not have a dedicated phone line, you would tie up the line, and the connection may trigger off if someone calls the phone line. We used  more of text than other bandwidth-hungry media out of need. Recently Internet connection speeds have increased tremendously from the use of broadband connections using technologies like cable and DSL (Digital Subscriber Lines) and 4G or LTE .  According to the FCC's standards, the new goal is for all household to have access to broadband with a minimum speed of 4 megabits per

How Maglev Trains Work

Have you been to an  airport  recently, you must have seen that air travel is increasingly being congested. In spite of numerous delays and flight cancellation, airplanes  are still the fastest means to travel several miles in a short time. Passenger air travel changed the transportation industry completely in the last century, allowing people move through large distances in hours instead of days or weeks or months. The option to airplanes  - feet, cars, buses, boats and old trains - are seriously too slow for today's fast-paced world. There is a new means of transportation that can completely change transportation of the 21st century the way aeroplanes did in the 20th century. Some countries are using very powerful  electromagnets  to produce very high-speed trains, known as Maglev  trains .  Maglev is shortened form for magnetic levitation meaning that these trains float on top a guideway employing the basic principles of magnetism to replace the archaic steel wheel and
