To assist in locating a lost phone,Google and Apple have developed means to track down a lost phone irrespective of the operating system. The feature may be in-built, you will require to set it up and be able to access it.
Locating a lost iPhone

To disable Find My iPhone on a device, Apple wants the user to approve the change using his or her Apple ID password. In effect,if a thief grabs your device they will not be able to disable Find My iPhone altogether unless they know your password.
Locating a missing Android phone

If you lose your device, you can use another Android device to track your phone via the app, or go to Google's Android Device Manager website. You need to log/sign into the site with the same Google account you used to sign/login into the app on your phone.
Using the app, you are able play a sound on the device, lock it, or totally erase it. As for the iPhone, if the device is switched off ,you are not able to track it until it is switched back on and connected to a network.
Locating other types of mobile phones
Android and iOS are the major mobile phones currently in use today. Windows Phone need to follow the instructions laid out by Microsoft .Follow the steps below:
1.Go to account.microsoft.com/devices. If you're prompted to sign in, use the same Microsoft account you used to sign in on your phone.
2.Choose the phone you want to find, and then click Find My Phone.

BlackBerry 10 users can also track a lost device using BlackBerry Protect. If you're still clutching onto a flip phone, odds are you won't have the ability to track your phone in the event it goes missing. Sorry.
Follow the below steps to enable location reporting:1.Click “Blackberry Protect” on home screen or a folder.
2.Click on “Menu” and select “options”.
3.Select Check Box in front of “I want this device’s location to be viewable from the BlackBerry Protect web site” in location reporting section.
